Your child will bring home a homework assignment sheet on Friday which spells out the homework for each evening Monday night through Thursday night the following week. There is no homework Friday night through Sunday unless your child cannot complete their homework during the week due to activities or family commitments or they choose to earn extra credit reading minutes. It is fine with me if your child completes all the homework for the week on the weekend.

20 minutes of reading Monday night through Thursday night will always be assigned. Sometimes I will assign something specific I would like them to read during the 20 minutes. Extra credit will be given for reading Friday night through Sunday night. Research shows the single most significant factor that effects how well a child reads is how much they hear a fluent reader. So, if your child is struggling in reading and/or its a fight to get them to do it, I will accept being read to minutes as well as the minutes they read themselves.

Homework should not take your child any more than 30 to 40 minutes, including reading time. If homework is taking longer than this, please contact me immediately. I will always assign homework based on skills we are currently working on but the primary purpose of homework is to 1) Get your child used to reading every night. 2) Get your child used to good study habits they will need in the coming years of their education. 3) Get your child used to being responsible for their work and meeting deadlines. So, it is important we discuss modifying homework to accommodate your child's need and accomplish these goals.

I give STARS for completion of homework and another STARS for parent initials in your child's planner. If your child is not completing their homework for the week, they will complete it during Study Hall Friday afternoon (recess) and during Fun Friday time.
